Getting from Sheffield to Edinburgh takes just under four hours with CrossCountry.
That's quite a long train journey for the UK, yet it offers an excellent chance to gawk out of the window at the UK's spectacular natural beauty. On your journey, you'll travel all the way up from South Yorkshire to North Yorkshire and then up the East Coast Mainline, passing through cities like York and Durham and heading north to the Scottish Borders. After you pass into Scotland at Berwick-upon-Tweed, you will shortly be arriving in Edinburgh.
CrossCountry offers an extensive railway network linking towns and cities across England, Scotland, and Wales. This network enables travel to key British cities such as Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham.
Departing from Sheffield
Sheffield Train Station is located on Sheaf Street, just off the A61, on the edge of the city centre. It's situated across the road from Sheffield Hallam University and isn't far from the city's major shops, bars, and restaurants.
Taxis stop at the station's entrance, and most of Sheffield's local buses run from the Sheffield Bus Interchange or Arundel Gate Interchange. Both stations are just a short walk from the train station, making it very convenient to get to from anywhere around the city.
This station is served by four major UK train operators: East Midlands Railway, Northern, CrossCountry, and TransPennine Express.
Main stops
Overall, eight stations separate Sheffield from Edinburgh Waverley: Wakefield Westgate, Leeds, York, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Yet, these may change due to scheduling issues, engineering works, poor weather, or train faults. Double-checking before you travel is always recommended to avoid disappointment.

Arriving at Edinburgh Waverley
Edinburgh Waverley is situated in the heart of Edinburgh, nestled between the historic ‘old’ town and the ‘new’ town, which dates back to the eighteenth century but has been added to ever since. It has gradually developed into a cosmopolitan and modern side of the city, while the ‘old’ town dates back to the Middle Ages and exudes old-world regal charm.
Market Street includes a taxi rank, while Princes Street and North Bridge offer public bus services and trams, and there’s even an airport shuttle bus that regularly stops outside the station’s entrance. Edinburgh Waverley has four exits: Market Street, Carlton Road (which is accessible via a lift), Waverley Bridge (which can be accessed via a ramp), and Princes Street.
Edinburgh has a lot to do right outside of the station. Once you leave Waverley, you’ll immediately see the famous Walter Scott Monument dedicated to one of Scotland’s most coveted writers. There’s also Princes Gardens, a beautiful public park that separates the old town from the new, offering a lovely view of Edinburgh Castle that hangs above. The National Galleries of Scotland is also within Princes Gardens on The Mound, offering a tantalising view into some of Scotland and the world’s most outstanding artworks.
Edinburgh Waverley is a key UK transport hub. It provides connections to the rest of Scotland, to cities like Glasgow and Inverness, for example, while running a key service to Eastern England, going as far as London Kings Cross. LNER, ScotRail, Caledonian Sleeper, CrossCountry, Lumo, Avanti West Coast, and TransPennine Express all run services through Edinburgh Waverley.
